This is the resources page where you can find a lot of useful information pertaining to music production and music publishing which are either quality websites, books, etc. I review each of these websites and blogs for quality and accurate information.
Quality Websites and Blogs in Home Music Production and Publishing
Based on experience, I recommend the following websites below if you are looking for authoritative information on the subject of recording, mixing, mastering and music publishing.
1.) Sound on Sound – this is an online magazine of in-depth articles in music production particularly highlighting recording techniques and mixing. The online version is free to read and you can search them in the site. The articles are written by experts and contains very detailed information suitable for beginners and intermediate users.
2.) Audio TutsPlus – I am one of the contributors on this wonderful tutorial site on music production. You are free to read a lot of quick tips, tutorials and techniques in recording, audio mixing and few on audio mastering. The site also offers premium content which of course contains videos, audio files which can be helpful to you if you are still learning. The premium content is paid.
3.) Production Advice – Ian Shepherd is one of my contacts in the field of audio mastering. He is a professional mastering engineer and his blog offers a lot of insightful articles on mastering and recording.
4.) GearSlutz – one of the best forums for recording, mixing and mastering. I also contribute on this forum but not frequently now because of my busy schedule. They are one of the friendliest forum for music production. I recommend you to be a member of that site, you can ask any production related questions and a lot of experts are contributing there also. It is the only forum where you can see Bob Katz, Ethan Winer, Butch Vig and other prominent experts and producers in the music industry.
5.) Eric Beall – he is one of the most respected veterans in the music publishing business. Go and read his blog and you can find a lot of valuable information when it comes to music publishing and music business in general. I have read his book “Making Music Make Money” and it offers one of the best introductory information in music publishing and songwriting.
6.) Home recording forums – I contribute to this forum frequently. This is a more formal forum for home recording enthusiasts and producers. This is a busy forum with a lot of users. So expect that your question would be quickly answered.
7.) Mix Online – this is an online magazine where you can read interviews, tips and trends of the hottest audio mixer in the industry. For example, you want to learn Andy Wallace mixing tips because you love how Nirvana Nevermind albums are mixed.
8.) Launch Pad Music Services -Audio mastering, audio mix downs and music licensing services. You can submit your originally produced music to them for music licensing.
9.) Ethan Winer – a prominent expert on home studio acoustics. You can read this site for a lot of wonderful tips on how to treat your recording studio. He is very willing to help you on this aspect.
10.) Music Production & Sound Engineering Courses- if you want to get certified the right way; you might want to take a music production course. Garnish School on Sound can help you on this. If you do not have the budget, you can read the school blog and check out their stuff. There are lot of great information on the site.
11.) Renegade Producer -website for music producers and musicians. Marius van Dyk shares a lot of his experiences in music production and business. A useful resource especially if you are an indie musician.
12.) Brian’s Bedroom – a very useful blog if you are entirely producing music in Ubuntu – Linux platform. The blog features 100% open source tools for music production whether it’s DAW, plug-ins and editors.
13.) Taxi music business FAQ – tons of music industry and business related articles here. If you are a new songwriter or an aspiring indie artist, you should be reading this FAQ as it contains a lot of beginner information.
14.) Recording Producer Blog – if you are an aspiring recording producer, you should be reading this blog as it contains a lot of tips and videos made by other fellow recording producers.
15.) Tweak Headz – great beginner website on digital home music production. It contains a lot of technical information pertaining to digital recording that every newbie should know.
16.) Bobby Owsinski – a producer and a technical music consultant, his blog “The Big Picture” contains a lot of professional tips in audio mixing, recording and production in general. He is the author of one of the best audio mixing books entitled “Mixing Engineers Handbook“.
17.) Silver Lake studios blog – Travis Whitmore is a professional drummer and engineer. He recorded and produced drum tracks for big projects. In his blog, you can find a lot of drum production tips that includes recording and mixing. As you have already learn, drums are one of the critical tracks to record and mix.
18.) Audio Issues – Björgvin Benediktsson is a frequent contributor to the Audio TutsPlus website. In his blog, he shares a lot of recording and mixing tips which are vital to get the best sounding mix as possible.
