How to Install and Configure Audacity in Ubuntu Linux

by: Emerson ManingoEmail Author on August 13, 2010 in Recording Equipment

Due to the increasing demand from readers and popularity about Audacity tutorials in open source operating systems like Linux. I have decided to create a new category in this audio recording website dedicated to “Audacity in Ubuntu”.

You will find tips, techniques , detailed recording methods, mixing and music production tutorials in Audacity, an open source audio editor just like what you will read in my Windows based audio mixing/recording software tutorials.

I have been using Adobe Audition in Windows and use another computer for Linux Ubuntu with Audacity. It is your choice, you can configure your computer if you have two hard disks, one hard disk for primary (Windows with Windows based audio editor like Audition) and another hard disk for Ubuntu/Audacity and you just need only one computer.

It is recommended you have a large space hard drive (320GB at a minimum) with RAM at 2GB minimum.

So to start with Audacity installation in Ubuntu, please refer to the following steps below:

Step1.) Go to Applications — Ubuntu Software Center.
Step2.) In the search box, type audacity.

Step3.) Click the yellow arrow. You will then see the Audacity information page. Click “Install”.

You will be required to type in your Linux password.

Step4.) Audacity installer will then be downloaded and installed automatically to your Linux computer. You will know that it is complete if it is not any more downloading and applying changes and it will go to the view in Step 3.) except that the “Install” word changes to “Remove”. In this case, Audacity has been successfully installed in Ubuntu. Close the Ubuntu software center.

Step5.) Lets launch Audacity for the first time. Go to Applications — Sound & Video — Audacity.

A welcome message will pop up, just click OK and check “Don’t show this again at start up”.

This is the screenshot of the Audacity audio editor in Ubuntu:

Step6.)Lets open an audio file, Go to File — Open and then select any audio, MP3 will do. It should look like below after opening it. Nice isn’t it?

In the coming tutorials, we start digging further into Audacity set of tools.
