I agree, listening skills are more important than gears. It is more advisable to master the art of listening for mastering process than buying those gears in advance. As simple as distinguishing what can be improved in a mix in simple monitoring system can be very useful.

For example, because we are talking about non-continuous signals, but discrete quantisation values then spectrum analysis goes some way into surfacing any issues with a mix, in addition Phase optics or sonographics can really highlight potential problems. Having a few reference tracks on your computers desktop will help keep your ears in a state of referral.
